The Yukon Facility
MAX Environmental is the largest permitted hazardous materials treatment, storage and disposal facility (TSDF) in the eastern United States. The company’s Yukon TSDF is the only facility in Pennsylvania that offers hazardous waste treatment and on-site commercial disposal for residual waste. MAX’s Yukon facility is Part B Permitted under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and meets or exceeds all federal and state regulatory requirements. Yukon is also able to accept and treat wastes from Superfund sites under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA). The site is also approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) to manage wastes from projects that must comply with the PADEP’s Hazardous Sites Cleanup Act (HSCA).
MAX has unmatched ability to treat and dispose of heavy-metal waste. Many government agencies and Fortune 1000 corporations have used the Part B permitted Yukon facility as their waste disposal site. MAX’s Solid Waste Stabilization and Solidification (SWSS) System can treat more than 50 truckloads per day of dust and solid hazardous soil waste material.
Furthermore, MAX’s impoundments are completely encapsulated to prevent leachate from affecting groundwater supplies.
MAX is completing a state-of-the-industry landfill capping project for a disposal unit at its Bulger Facility and has entered into an agreement with the PADEP to provide a similar capping system for its original disposal unit that was closed prior to enactment of RCRA regulations. MAX will provide slopes that promote positive drainage, a synthetic infiltration barrier, a synthetic drainage layer and a vegetative soil cover layer.
Recapping projects use non-hazardous waste materials that meet “beneficial use requirements” for the use of waste to create a positive drainage cap support zone. Leachate and storm water that contact the waste are collected and discharged through MAX’s NPDES-permitted wastewater treatment system. Storm water run-on/run-off, erosion and sedimentation control devices are integral to the re-closure plans.
MAX is planning for the future with the expansion of its disposal capacity at Yukon and Bulger. Additionally, MAX is constructing a state-of-the-art containment building designed to process and treat hazardous K061 Electric Arc Furnace Dust (EAFD) and other solid hazardous waste.
The types of RCRA waste that MAX is permitted to manage include:
- Electric Arc Furnace Dust (K061)
- Corrosives (D002)
- Arsenic (D004)
- Barium (D005)
- Cadmium (D006)
- Chromium (D007)
- Lead (D008)
- Selenium(D010)
- Silver (D011)
- Waste Acid/Pickle Liquor (K062)
- Hazardous soils, slags and brick
- Waste acids
- Air pollution control dusts/fly ash
- Lead abatement/sandblast residues
- Wastewater treatment sludges
Before Shipping to MAX, you and your drivers should know which forms and permits are required, as well as the routing and safety procedures to follow when approaching the Yukon or Bulger Facility, and inside the gates.
