MAX Environmental Technologies, Inc. Receives Final Approval from the PA Department of Environmental Protection for Electric Arc Furnace Dust Treatment & Disposal
Pittsburgh, PA, February 6, 2006 -- The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) has granted MAX Environmental Technologies, Inc., an exclusion to the Hazardous Waste Regulations by for the treatment and disposal of Electric Arc Furnace Dust (EAFD). The exclusion can be found in the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection rules covering HazardousWaste, Pa. Code 25 Chapter 261 (www.pabulletin.com/secure/data/vol36/36-6/219.html) EAFD is collected in the emission control system of the electric steel making process, which uses recycled steel scrap. The EAFD is a U.S. EPA-listed hazardous waste, listed as K061. This exclusion will solely allow the MAX Yukon, PA Facility to accept, treat, and dispose of up to 300,000 cubic yards annually of the treated residuals. This exclusion re-classifies the treatment residues as non-hazardous waste, allowing for disposal in MAX’s Subtitle D permitted landfill.
In the last decade, the use of Electric Arc Furnaces has increased to become the primary steel making process in use. More than 1 million tons of EAFD are now generated annually by the domestic steel industry. The large volumes of dust generated by this steel industry are a result of more efficient capture and sequester of the airborne particles at the generation source.
MAX Environmental is a Pennsylvania-based environmental services company that offers hazardous and non-hazardous industrial waste transportation, treatment, disposal, analytical, environmental remediation and construction services. MAX owns and operates treatment, storage and disposal facilities (TSDFs) in Pennsylvania. The privately-held company was established in 1957 and has treated more than 50 million tons of hazardous waste and more than 1 billion gallons of liquid waste.
